Cookies for brunch!

Posted on admin

Well it’s finally here…the end of my 2nd annual National Cookie Week. It’s been a great week of making #CookieWeek trend on the twitter, baking a cookie a day, visiting all my fabulous participating bakery friends and seeing what they came up with…OH No! What am I to do? Hit the gym is what. BUT!! we still have today and one more cookie from your truly! I won’t keep you waiting for the recipe as I am sure there is a lot of Sunday mimosa to be had!

So without further adieu I give you Lady Nana Choconuts! (aka Banana Choco Peanut Butter cookies)

Her Needs…

1 stick of butter softened
1/2 cup sugar
1 egg
2 tsp vanilla
2 bananas mashed
1/2 cup Peanut Butter & Co. Dark Chocolate Peanut butter
2.5 cups flour
3/4 tsp baking soda
1/2 tsp baking powder
1/4 tsp salt
1/2 cup dark chocolate chips.
1/2 cup chopped walnuts

Preheat oven to 325°

1. In the bowl of a mixer cream butter and sugars till smooth. (You should know me by now and I don’t have a kitchen aid so I use a fork..works just as good but is a little more time consuming!)

2. Add egg and vanilla and beat.

3. Fold in mashed banana and peanut butter till combined.

4. In a separate bowl combine flour, baking powder, baking soda and salt. Whisk to combine.

5. Add dry ingredients to batter in sections till incorporated, then add the walnuts and chips.

6. Spoon tablespoonfuls onto a baking sheet and bake for 8 to 10 minutes or till bottoms start to slightly brown.

These cookies come out doughy and very banana bread like. They will become very fragrant when they are done which is another way to tell they are finished.

Take them out of the oven, let them cool and Carmen Miranda do a dance cause you are finished!

I also have to take a moment and thank a few people. First off Keith Oberlin for hanging with me for hours and taking fabulous food photos!

Gerard Conte is an amazing illustrator who for the second year has done my bidding and created NCW images that I love and astound me!

To my dearest friends (especially M. Bragg) who are my taste testers, my assistants, my support system and care takers whom this week wouldn’t be possible without.

Lastly to all the participating bakeries. Amy’s Bread, Angel Food Bakery, Baked NYC, Billy’s Bakery, Butterfly Bakeshop, Eleni’s, Hey, Cookie!, Magnolia Manor Sweets, Make My Cake,  Michael Allen Desserts, Milk and Cookies, One Girl Cookies and Protein Bakery. You all made this week very special and tons of fun! I couldn’t have done it with out you either and I can’t wait to see what next year holds! Please support them!

Here’s to hitting the gym and beach bodies!

Cinco de Cookie!

Posted on admin

I love National Cookie Week for many reasons, the participating bakeries, the friends pounding at my door for cookies, the sugar and of course cause it falls on Cinco De Mayo! (Cue Mariachi band here)

Last years Gay Mexican Wedding Cookie was a hit with all the Gays, straights and everyone in between that I had no idea how I was gonna top it, that is until I realized that I didn’t have a cookie with liquor in it yet for the week! So I’m gonna shut up and just give you the cookie recipe so we can all start drinking!

Ladies and Gentlemen I give you… Señorita Cookie Deritas! aka Margarita Cookies!

(Note: After searching though recipes to get an idea of what other people had done it seems that the standard across the board was this recipe I first found on another fabulous food blog called Smitten Kitchen. (She was inspired by Dorie Greenspan’s Lemon Sables) I feel like credit needs to be given here as she definitely got me started but as always I had to gay it up and make it a little more fabulous! So, I guess the recipe is mine now cause it certainly has been altered!)

Her needs…

1 cup butter (2 sticks) softened
2/3 cup confectioners sugar
2 large egg yolks
pinch of salt
1 – 50ml bottle of Cuervo Silver (it’s one of those little bottles you keep in your desk drawer)
Zest of 2 limes
Zest of 1/2 Orange
1/2 cup shredded coconut
2 cups of flour

Coating
1/2 a cup hot pink sanding sugar
2 tsp kosher salt

Her wants…

1. In a large bowl cream the butter with your mixer till smooth. (or, like me use, a fork)

2. Sift sugar into bowl and beat again till smooth

3. Beat in one egg yolk followed by the salt, zest, coconut and tequila.

4. If you are working with a mixer reduce the speed and add the flour. Beat till just incorporated as you don’t want to overwork the dough. If you are not using a mixer do the same and you’ll be fine.

5. Turn the dough out, split in half and wrap in a log shape. Then freeze for about 15 mins.

6. Beat the remaining egg yolk in a bowl and in a separate bowl mix the sugar and salt.

7. Spread Sugar/salt mixture on a smooth surface large enough to roll the dough in.

8. Uncover one of the chilled dough logs and brush with egg yolk. Lay in sugar and gently roll till coated. (make sure your hands are egg free) Keep rolling till desired legnth is attained (don’t you get any ideas!) It all depends on how big or small you like your cookies.

9. Wrap the coated log and freeze again for another 12 mins. Cut and bake for about 10 mins.

Let cool before moving to wire racks to finish and George Lopez you have a fiesta!

1 day more of cookie madness then it’s off to the gym with all of us!!!

Cookies for our health!

Posted on admin

Happy Friday of National Cookie Week y’all!! So it wouldn’t be cookie week if we didn’t have a recipe from fabulous LA food blogger Anita Lau, aka The Mad Hungry Woman. Anita and I have formed what has become a beautiful relationship across the states and via email but unfortunately her schedule keeps her so busy that she has no time to bake for cookie week. So, I do it for her.

I have an inkling that Anita loves her a not too sweet oaty dessert just because this is our second oat child of a cookie and to be honest this cookie is quite delicioso. This time around it’s a healthy option as far as cookies go and so without further adieu I give you…

Ms. Anita Diet Cookie! aka Healthy Oatmeal Cookies

Her Needs…

1 cup whole wheat flour
1 tsp. ground cinnamon
1 tsp. baking powder
1/2 tsp baking soda
1/2 tsp. salt
1/2 cup packed light brown sugar
1/4 cup unsweetened applesauce
2 egg whites
2 tablespoons butter
1-1/2 tsp. vanilla
1-1/3 cups uncooked old-fashioned or quick oats
1/4 cup cranberries
1/4 cup walnuts

Her Wants…

Preheat oven to 375°

1. Lightly spray cookie sheets with nonstick cooking spray.  Set aside.

2. Combine flour, cinnamon, baking powder, baking soda and salt in medium bowl; mix well.

3. Combine brown sugar, applesauce, egg whites, butter and vanilla in large bowl.  Mix until small crumbs form.  Add flour mixture; mix well.

4. Blend in oats, cranberries and walnuts.

(Don’t be mad but I may have split the dough in half and added half a cup of dark chocolate chips to one of those segments…everything is better with chocolate no?)4. Drop by rounded teaspoonfuls onto prepared cookie sheets, 2 inches apart.  Bake 8 to 12 minutes or until golden brown.

Cool on wire racks and Jack Lalanne take a breather! Have a great cookie weekend!

Tea Time for Cookie Week

Posted on admin

We have crossed the hump of cookie week and boy, I can’t believe what a week it’s been already! I guess it’s time for me to take a breather with some tea and today’s cookie of the day!!

Inspired by Cher, Tea with Mussolini, and everything gay in between I bring you today’s cookie week cookie of the day!

So without further adieu… I give you Ms. Chammy T Cookies! (aka Lemon Chamomile Sugar Cookies)

Her Needs…

1 cup unsalted butter (softened)
1.5 cups sugar
1 egg
1/2 teaspoon vanilla
1 TBS Honey
Zest of 2 large lemons
2 3/4 cup All Purpose Flour
1 tsp baking soda
1/2 tsp baking powder
1/2 tsp salt
8 to 10 TBS of very strong Chamomile tea or chamomile butter (I’ll explain in a sec)

So quick word about the chamomile and this cookie. This cookie was an experiment after I had some tasty chamomile lemonade and it didn’t occur to me at first to make chamomile butter. So I boiled some water threw about 8 bags of tea in and let it steep it till it was super strong. Granted I didn’t need all that tea, I made some lemonade for myself afterwards, but looking back I could’ve just taken chamomile buds and simmered it for a while in a stick and a half of butter, strained it, cooled it and refrigerated it till I could use it in the cookies. I think the chamomile would be a stronger presence that way but either way you do it this cookie is light and delicious!

SO… preheat your oven to 350°

1. Cream your butter and sugar together with a mixer or a fork like me!

2. Add in your egg, vanilla, honey and zest

3. In a separate bowl whisk together four, baking powder, baking soda and salt

4. Sift dry ingredients over your wet ones in sections mixing to combine each time.

5. Once combined add tea (if using actual tea instead of tea butter) and taste till ou have desired flavor. (Note: it’s going to be light so don’t go crazy with the tea if you’ve already added about 8 to 10 TBS.)

6. Bake for about 8 mins or till cookies seem just about done.

Remove, let cool and Loretta Castorini you have a cookie!

Keith Oberlin is amazing and I love his photos ©2012. Many thanks to him. Check out the participating bakeries here… National Cookie Week

Have a great Thursday of Cookie Week my little cookie monsters!

Now on to bigger things (Dont you get any ideas!) The Gay Gourmet!™ Cookie Of The Day!!

This cookie was inspired by pizza. I’m from Brooklyn, you see, and it’s basically the land of pizza. There is nothing like a good slice from Casa Calamari but on occasion I do love specialty slices. amongst my favorite are chicken marsala, white slices, The Brid from Two Boots and Hawaiian! SO I thought to myself why not? Why not…try to invoke a little more summer in a cookie and make a Hawaiian cookie. Yup you heard right! Bacon, Pineapple and all!

So without further adieu I give you Ms. Wanaeat Macookies! (aka Hawaiian Cookies)

Her Needs…

1 cup unsalted butter (softened)
3/4 cup sugar
3/4 cup brown sugar
2 Eggs
1.5 tsp vanilla
2 1/4 cup flour
1tsp baking soda
2 tsp salt
1/2 cup dried pineapple (chopped)
1lb bacon
1/3 cup macadamia nuts (chopped)

Preheat oven to 350°

1. Cook bacon over medium heat in a skillet till crisp. Drain on paper towels and let cool.

2. In the bowl of an electric mixer fitted with the paddle attachment (or just use a fork) cream butter and sugars together till fluffy.

3. Add Eggs one by one till incorporated and then add vanilla.

4. In a separate bowl whisk together flour, baking soda and salt and in sections add to wet ingredients.

5. Once combined add pineapple, nuts and crushed bacon pieces and fold into dough.

6. Put tablespoon sized spoonfuls about an inch apart on a baking sheet and bake for 8 to 10 minutes or until golden, rotating the baking sheet halfway through the cookie time.

We are in full swing of The Second Annual National Cookie Week and boy does it feel good! My sources tell me that Amy’s bread and Billy’s Bakery both sold out of their cookie of the day, tweets are coming in in droves and there even was a fabulous article written up about me and on of the participating bakeries!!! You can check that out here… Center Square Journal! On to The Gay Gourmet’s!™ second cookie of cookie week!

Inspired by last year’s Gayest Cookie in Town! I couldn’t be called The Gay Gourmet!™ if I cookie week didn’t have a fabulously gay cookie! This cookie was inspired by Tiffany’s jewels and stained glass. So delicate, so beautiful and simple!

Okay! okay! So maybe that’s not how the song goes but how excited am I for The Second Annual National Cookie Week?!?!?! You can now go to NationalCookWeek.com and see all the participating bakeries, recipes, contests etc and then go cookie crazy!!!!

Remember to share your recipes, your pictures and your adventures in cookie hunting, from wherever you are, via Instagram or whatever to my twitter pages (@TheGayGourmet & @CookieWeek), Facebook Pages (facebook.com/thegaygourmet & /CookieWeek), Tumblr (NationalCookieWeek) and wherever else you see fit!

So without further adieu, I give you The Gay Gourmet’s!™ first cookie of The Second Annual National Cookie Week! YAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAY!! (Much thanks to Keith Oberlin for his amazing food photography!)

Oatmeal Nutella Sammies! (a.k.a Ms. Oatella Sams!)

Her wants…

1 stick plus 6 TBS unsalted butter (softened)
6 TBS firmly packed Light Brown Sugar
6 TBS Dark Brown Sugar
2 Eggs
1 tsp good vanilla
1 cup all-purpose flour
1/2 cup white whole wheat flour
1 tsp baking soda
1 tsp cinnamon
2 tsp salt
3 cups Oats (I like Quaker® – it’s yummy)
1 jar Nutella®

Her Needs…

1. Preheat oven to 350

2. In a large bowl beat butter and sugar together till nice and creamy (feel free to use your Kitchen-Aid® but since I STILL don’t own one I use a fork and it works just fine!)

3. Add both eggs and vanilla. Beat well. (I switch to a whisk here for better and quicker incorporation)

4. In a separate bowl combine flour, baking soda, cinnamon and salt. Mix well and using a strainer sift over wet ingredients in parts, mixing as you go! (Here I start using a rubber spatula)

5. Add your oats and stir till just combined

6. Now drop small rounded balls of dough on ungreased cookie sheets and bake for 8 to 10 mins or until golden. (Two tips here: a. I like making these guys tiny and bite size ’cause it makes them super fun but you can make them as big or as little as you want. b. Watch your cookies! As in any baking, you want to pull them out just shy of being done as the heat will continue to cook them once the are out of the oven and no one likes a dry cookie!)

7. Once they are done let them rest a couple minutes on the cookie sheet and then transfer them to a wire rack to cool.

8. Put a smear of Nutella® on the bottom side of on of the cookies and then add another to make a sandwich.

9. Don’t make the sammies till you a ready to eat them and store the cookies in airtight container so they don’t dry out!

Careful as these are addictive and you will eat the whole batch!!

Keep checking the sites for Cookie Week updates and have a very Happy National Cookie Week!!

Deliciously Cookie-ing!

I Can Make You Hot!

You know I love getting snail mail especially when it’s a cookbook or any other cool presents from one of my readers/followers. So when I Can Make You Hot – The Supermodel Diet – by Real Housewife of NY Kelly Bensimon arrived in my mailbox I nearly died! I thought musical theatre and cooking were my two true loves but there is definitely a sprinkle of Real Housewife in there!

The Real Housewives of (insert city here) have taken over reality T.V. and possibly have redefined what it means to be a celebrity. We know that The Gay Gourmet!™ loves him a real housewife. Yes folks, I admit it. I am a super fan in hiding. Why, do you ask? Well I think for the same reason anybody likes “reality” T.V. It’s a glimpse into someone else’s life, secrets, drama etc and these women give it to you in many forms, covered in fabulous!

I don’t think that the Real Housewives of NY really has shed a good light on Ms. Bensimon but upon doing some more research she has done it all. From model, to magazine editor, to starting up a few magazines, to philanthropist, to author, to being a mother and now cookbook author.

Upon first glance this cookbook seems fairly simple, not overly complicated and definitely a little gimmicky (but who doesn’t love a gimmick?) I was curious what made her decide to write a cookbook and luckily I had a chance to sit down with Kelly and discuss the book over jellybeans! She says was not only inspired by her fans wanting to know more about the life of Kelly but also by her children. The overall message she is trying to get across from the book is she want’s you to be the best possible you that you can be. That’s a vague statement, I know, but upon glancing further into the book she not only talks recipes and exercise (only 20 mins a day) but she also shares experiences living as a model and being pregnant as model, fashion advice as well as all the tricks she’s picked up along the way as she juggled her very busy life all the while being a single mom. (Wow that was a mouthful!) On to the food… She never claims to be a chef she only says that desperate times called for desperate measures and when she had to be a single mom and take care of her two gorgeous little girls she learned to make her family recipes. All the recipes are a collection of Kelly’s family and unfortunately I haven’t had a moment to cook anything with National Cookie Week fast approaching. All I can say is that they certainly look interesting, are most definitely easy and I wish she used a better photographer for her food photos. (Keith Oberlin get that camera ready!)

That being said [and after meeting her] this book is very Kelly. Charming, sweet, sincere, fun and very genuine! My favorite Hot Tip is

“Sometimes when you think you are hungry, you really just need an energy boost and a sweet drink will do the trick. Next time you think you’re hungry, try a lemonade and a diversion. “

FYI I’ve been drinking lemonade as if lemons are going extinct.

The book message in three easy steps is.

1. Exercise every day. No Excuses (20 minutes is enough and it shouldn’t be called a work out cause it shouldn’t be work!)

2. Make healthy food choices and eat well six days a week.

3. Make Sunday your “funday” and eat whatever you want. If you’ve been following steps one and two your body can definitely handle a day of freedom.

Can she make you hot? I am not sure but I’m certainly going to give it a try! Much thanks to Kelly for being super cute and letting me chat with her for a while! You can buy the book here on Amazon

Be hot my loves!

Michael Muñoz

Eat Me Out! – Balaboosta

Yes folks! Eat Me Out, The Gay Gourmet’s!™ restaurant review section is back and today we are talking Spring in the Middle East via a relatively new Nolita joint called Balaboosta!

We all know that your [dateless] NYC born and raised Gay Gourmet is forever traipsing this city and it’s eateries. I also assume that you know that I try not to be pretentious about my food and where I eat. As long as it’s good I could be eating in a back alley somewhere and I wouldn’t care. Just put it in my mouth and let me go to town! (Don’t you get any ideas!) So when I came across Balaboosta by a recommendation from a friend who works at a very respectable/well known food magazine I was super excited to see what the hub-bub was about.

To be honest I actually waited for the right opportunity company-wise came to me. Much like I’m picky about my men, I am also picky about where I go with certain people. Some people are more low key, some just don’t know how to act right, some won’t travel outside of the gayborhood and some are just easy as a teenage girl during prom night! Hence why when one of my oldest friends whom I shall call Pamalama (aka old easy) asked me to lunch I knew exactly where to take her! Lama and I have a history of never going to the same place twice and always going someplace very NYC. So, I know we’d have the best experience possible together!

Okay Okay..on to the dirt. I could tell you all about Einat Admony’s culinary history with NYC and her delicious falafel at Taïm but you can look all of that up on your own.

Nestled off of a lovely corner in picturesque Nolita (Spring & Mulberry to be exact) you’ll find Balaboosta (The Perfect Housewife) It’s lovely to walk into as it’s rustic wood ceiling and tchotchke lined shelves remind you of home. The staff was pleasant and attentive yet I was confused as the prior day we called and asked if we needed a lunch reservation and were told they don’t take reservations for two but upon walking in I was asked if I had a reservation. What?

As I waited for Lama to arrive I was kinda obsessed with the recipe boxes that were on this shelf next to our table to be honest! Everything in them sounded delicious and the waitress even went to the kitchen to ask what a word was that we couldn’t read!

Let’s get down to the nitty gritty. We decided to start with the fried olives. I mean…salty olives that are fried… what’s not to like? Put it over Organic Labne (strained yogurt) and drizzle with Harissa Oil (red pepper oil) and it was heaven. For our main course I ordered the Shakshouka with merguez, we shared a pumpkin carrot soup and Lama ordered the Goat Cheese Panino.

I love Shakshouka! In layman’s terms it’s basically poached eggs and a delicious tomato sauce. Think of it as if you took the sauce from a chicken cacciatore dish and put some poached eggs in it and served it. It’s an egg lovers dream especially when you add meat to it. This Shakshouka was unfortunately a little underwhelming. I hate to say it and maybe it’s Einat’s way of making it but I’ve always had delicious runny eggs in my shakshouka. The more to mop up with the yummy rustic crusty bread they give you! These eggs were so well done I could’ve made egg salad and as for the Merguez…(Lamb Sausage) well if I found more than the little nugget maybe I could say something about it. The best part of the dish was the sauce left over at the end. It was rich and ever so tasty and I wanted more!

The pumpkin carrot soup was good. Light with the tiniest hint of spice and the pumpkin seeds and yogurt also added a nice warm and cool effect to it all. Had we ordered it first I think it would have made a nice start to the meal but since we were so deep in rich things it got lost. Nevertheless it was still good.

Put goat cheese, olives, grilled zucchini, pesto and roasted peppers in a pressed sandwich and you will always have a winner! This was the best thing we tasted and Pamalama only let me have one bite as she quickly deep throated the thing in only the way she could and I don’t blame her.

Being very ful,l we decided to skip dessert. It was lunch after all and we have to watch our girlish figures. Swimsuit season is fast approaching afterall! Overall, I think the perfect housewife left her kids to tend to the meal while she went for a massage. Or maybe in trying to be so darn perfect we lost site of the things that should be the easiest. I don’t know. I try to be easy to please and not too negative but I’m just relaying the truth here. I see the potential and why people would love it and I definitely will have to give it a try for dinner but as for first impressions for lunch I would’ve been just as happy with 3 dollar falafel at Rainbow Falafal.

As for The Gay Gourmet!™ rating… Balaboosta gets 3 out of 5 Wieners Up for a great staff, atmosphere and giving it a good try. Plus everyone deserves a second chance, no?

Michael Muñoz

Just The Tip! – Eating out!

Just the Tip is my favorite blog segment where I share Gourmet tips with you! Whether it be cooking, dating or otherwise, I’m here to help and take the guess work out of it all!

A couple weeks ago I had the pleasure of making an appearance at a Totally Tyler’s and Justin Luke’s book (Your Boyfriend & Other Boys I’ve Kissed and Gulliver Travels) reading/signing. The evening was titled a Double Date with Tyler and Justin and it was a fabulous evening of dramatic/comedic readings, (I mean what would a gay book reading be without some laughs and a little drama!) sexy talk, quiet moments, Paige Turner, The Drama Queenz and me of course!

I was a little out of sorts about what to do at a book reading as there was no kitchen and with all the wood and paper around I would have burnt the place down. SO I had a great idea for a song and dance (Obviously) and Lord knows I’m single so I came up with ten simple tips to have a fabulous evening out…even if it’s not going as planned.

So without further adieu here is The Gay Gourmet’s!™ Guide to Eating Out on a Date!

10. Always have more than one choice of restaurant in mind when first meeting someone. (We’re men after all and who doesn’t like a side of aggressive with their man? Even if you are a bottom…)
9.Pick something middle of the road price wise…unless you are going out with an investment banker then pick some place really nice and forget your wallet!
8. Specialty restaurants are always a fun choice! Find out what he likes and pick a place that does it really well. The extra effort will pay off in the end! (Don’t you get any ideas!)

7. Lighting is always important! Pick someplace lit but within reason reason. Ambers are best but we don’t always have that option. You want to see the person you are talking to, right? Unless it’s a blind date and he looks nothing like his Grindr picture. Then low lighting is best.

6. Now I’m all for supporting our people but don’t go to a gay restaurant/bar for 2 reasons..you don’t want anybody stealing your thunder or once again if he isn’t what you thought the last thing you don’t want to be is rude and have a wandering eye.
5. As far as ordering…suggestive foods like meatballs, sausage or aphrodisiacs like oysters, chocolate cardamom are a great way to subliminally get him into the mood!!
4. We all know how gay people like to drink but every so often we need a reminder that we shouldn’t be getting sloshed upon first meeting a man…unless you’re at The Eagle and it’s gonna be that kinda night.
3. Don’t go on a date starving. We all know we’ll go to the gym and eat a cracker to look real good for our date but in the end you’ll look like a beast cause you’ll be ravenous and the liquor will go straight to your head.
2. A fun way to get conversation going is to order things you can share. It also gives you some salvation if your date is a dud. “Mmm aren’t these buffalo balls just delightful?”
1. My last tip which is the most important is stay away from raw veggies, dairy or anything else that may repeat or give your the bubble guts! Either that or pop a Beano® or two before you leave the apartment!Well there you have it my delicious daters! Words to live by! God Speed and I’ll see you next time!

Michael Muñoz
